How long will my extension be?

Home Affairs will decide. We never promise it. The law allows up to three more months. Not more. (Immigration Act 13 of 2002, s.11(1)(a))

Can I extend a second time?

The law allows one renewal. Three extra months at most. It does not write “one time only”. We found no rule that counts. Read: can you extend your visa twice? (Immigration Act 13 of 2002, s.11(1)(a))

What if six months is not enough?

Two ways. Both start outside South Africa. You can leave and come back later for a new visit. The border officer decides each time. Travellers report a quick return gives no new days. Read: does a visa run work?. Or you can apply for a longer visa, like work or study, from your home country. Mostly, you cannot change visa type inside South Africa. A few rare cases exist. For those, ask a lawyer. (Immigration Act 13 of 2002, s.10(6)(b))

What if my date has already passed?

Check your dates anyway. It is free. You will see where you stand. Since 2025, visa lawyers say this: late applications are nearly always refused. The law does not say this. Do not stay after your visa ends. It can mean a ban. 12 months for up to 30 days late, five years for more. (Immigration Regulations 2014, r.27(3))

Can I stay while I wait for the answer?

The law is silent on the wait. No text gives the right. No text takes it away. Read: waiting for your visa.

Do I have to go in person?

Yes. The law says: go in person. You go to VFS. VFS collects your documents for Home Affairs. Home Affairs will decide. (Immigration Regulations 2014, r.9(8)(c))

Can you check my documents?

No. You keep your documents. We never see them. We ask you questions instead. Every known trap is a question.
