Can you leave South Africa while you wait?

What do the texts say about leaving?
We read the Act and the rules. For your case, they are silent. You applied in time. You wait for the answer. Can you fly out and back? No line says yes. No line says no. The texts leave a gap. We will not fill it.
Which date runs the clock?
Your visa’s own end date. The law counts overstay from that date. The rule’s name is regulation 27(1). Your application does not move the date. Your receipt does not move it. Waiting does not pause it. So your plan starts with one check. When does your visa end?

What is the warning people quote?
One official paper does speak of leaving. It is Form 20. It is not for a plain extension wait. It is for people whose visa already ended. Home Affairs let them stay and wait. The form’s own words: “you will be listed as an undesirable person in terms of section 30(1)(h) of the Act, should you depart from the Republic prior to the finalisation of your application for status”.
