When should you book your visa appointment?

Book your visa appointment as early as you can. On 1 September 2026, the first free day in Cape Town was six days away. That was South Africa’s quiet season. Busy months bring more tourists, and no one tells you the wait.

You cannot just walk into VFS. You book a day first. You book it on the VFS site. This page shows a real wait, with its date. And it shows the busy months.

How long is the wait for a day?

We looked on 1 September 2026. We started a booking for Cape Town. The screen said: “For Cape Town VAC, the earliest appointment is available on 07/09/2026 . this may change when you actually wish to make an appointment”. That was six days away. VFS itself says the day may change.

September is a quiet month. Few tourists come then. So six days is the calm wait. It is the best case we saw. It is not the rule.

Which months are busy in South Africa?

Stats SA counts tourists. In 2024, December had 10.4% of the year’s overseas tourists. June had just 6.3%. So December brought about 1.65 times more people than June. The biggest groups come from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy. Summer in South Africa runs from October to March. That is when they come.

How long is the wait in December?

We do not know. No one does. We have no December reading. VFS shows the wait only when you book. So we will not guess a number. We only know December is much busier.

When should you book?

As early as you can. Here is why. The law counts the day you go in person. A far-away day can make you late. So the wait for a day eats your time. First, know your date. Then book the first free day.

What if you find no day in time?

Take the first day you can get. Keep every screen and paper. Your day may still be late. Then read this page: is it too late to apply?

What happens after the visit?

The booking wait is only the first wait. After your visit, Home Affairs takes time too. No official number exists there either. Read: how long it really takes. Did a payment fail? Read: what if your visa payment fails?
