When must you apply to extend your visa?
South Africa’s law says: apply 60 days before your visa ends. One official paper says 30 days. The visa office’s site names no day. The safe day is the earliest one: 60 days before your visa ends.

What does the law say?
The rule is in the Immigration Regulations 2014. Its name is r.9(8)(c). It says: go in person. Apply at least 60 days before it ends.
The law has one more case. Was your visa given for under 30 days? Then apply 7 working days before it ends. Same rule, same name.

What does the visa office say?
You go to a VFS office. VFS takes your papers for Home Affairs.
The VFS site splits people by one question: how long do you want to stay? Three months or less: the site names no day of its own. It repeats one law line only. That line is for visas under 30 days. More than three months: the site says 60 days.

Why do the numbers not agree?
We do not know. No text says which day wins. And we will not guess for you. Here are the three texts:

So which day should you plan for?
The earliest day. That is the only safe plan. No text calls the later days wrong. But only the earliest day fits every text.

Is 60 days or 30 days right?
Both numbers are in official texts today. No text says which one wins. We show both, with their dates. The earliest day is the safe day. So plan for 60.
My visa ends in less than 60 days. What now?
You can still apply. Add a short letter to your papers. The letter says why you are late. Since 2025, visa lawyers say this: late applications are nearly always refused. The law does not say this. We have no proof a letter helps. One family did this in 2020. They were late. They got the extension. That is one story, not a rule. Home Affairs decides. No one can promise the answer.
