Do you need bank statements for your visa?
Yes. You need bank statements in South Africa. The law asks for three months of them. Your bank must stamp them. We read the law on 26 August 2026. It names no amount of money.

What does the law say?
The rule is r.11(3). We read it on 26 August 2026. Here is the law’s own wording:
“The proof of sufficient available financial resources contemplated in section 11(1)(b) of the Act shall be in the form of a recently bank certified statement, for the last three months.”
In plain words: three months of statements. And the bank must certify them. Certify means the bank marks them as true.
How much money is enough?
Here is the honest answer. The law names no amount. It names no currency. We read the law on 26 August 2026. Some pages give you a number. An amount to hold, or an amount per month. No such number is in the law. Any number you read is a guess. The law’s word is “sufficient”. No rand amount defines it. So show what you have. Three months, stamped, easy to read.

Why are statements not on the VFS list?
Two lists exist, and they do not agree. The law asks for bank statements. The VFS web list does not name them. That is for stays of three months or less. We read the VFS list on 29 August 2026. We read the law on 26 August 2026. Our papers page shows both readings.
Here is one more fact. VFS also has a paper list. Staff use it at the centre. That paper list does ask for proof of money. We saw it on files from 2020 and 2023. So the paper list sides with the law. Bring the statements. One bank visit settles it.
Do people really hand them in?
Yes, in practice too. We checked real extension files, 2020 to 2023. Four visa extensions in those years. Bank statements went in every time. Three to four months of them each time. All four extensions were granted. That is practice, not a rule. Home Affairs decides each case.
What if your money is in euros?
One traveller was refused over money. The officer read euros as rands. The numbers looked too small in rands. That is one report, not a rule. But the fix is cheap. Add one cover page to your statements. Name your currency on it. Add the amount in rands too. The same goes for dollars or pounds.
How must the bank stamp your statements?
A home print is not enough. The bank must certify your statements. Two ways work. A stamp from the bank’s system counts. Or a person stamps them by hand. Then ask for a stamp and a signature. On every page. Ask your bank for “stamped statements”. Most banks know this request well.
